Human chorionic gonadotropin or human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) is a glycoprotein hormone produced in pregnancy that is made by the developing embryo after conception and later by the syncytiotrophoblast (part of the placenta). Its role is to prevent the disintegration of the corpus luteum of the ovary and thereby maintain progesterone production that is critical for a pregnancy in humans. hCG may have additional functions; for instance, it is thought that hCG affects the immune tolerance of the pregnancy. Early pregnancy testing, in general, is based on the detection or measurement of hCG. Because hCG is produced also by some kinds of tumor, hCG is an important tumor marker especially (with clinical significance) in Gestational trophoblastic disease but it is not known whether this production is a contributing cause or an effect of tumorigenesis.
Weight loss
Usage of hCG is as an adjunct to the British endocrinologist A.T.W. Simeons’ ultra-low-calorie weight-loss diet (less than 500 calories). Simeons, while studying pregnant women in India on a calorie-deficient diet, and “fat boys” with pituitary problems (Frölich’s syndrome) treated with low-dose hCG, claimed that both lost fat rather than lean (muscle) tissue. He reasoned that hCG must be programming the hypothalamus to do this in the former cases in order to protect the developing fetus by promoting mobilization and consumption of abnormal, excessive adipose deposits. Simeons, practicing at Salvator Mundi International Hospital in Rome, Italy, recommended low-dose daily hCG injections (125 IU) in combination with a customized ultra-low-calorie (500 cal/day, high-protein, low-carbohydrate/fat) diet loss of adipose tissue without loss of lean tissue. After Simeons’ death, the diet started to spread to specialized centers and via popularization by individuals, such as the controversial author Kevin Trudeau, famous for promotion of alternative therapies and treatments.
HCG Diet
The HCG diet is most commonly referring to the British physician, Dr. Simeon’s protocol that he identified in the mid 1950′s. He discovered that when administered daily HCG patients could maintain their health through a low calorie diet, when on a low calorie diet without HCG patients became irritable, had hunger cravings, weakness and/or headaches. Normally when you reduce your caloric intake weight loss declines because your body goes into a protective starvation mode. When taking even a small amount of BHCG , your body thinks that it is pregnant. This prevents you from storing your fat. Consequently, as long as you stay to a low carbohydrate low fat diet you break down your abdominal fat for energy and can expect to lose up to a pound of fat per day.
The use of HCG in a diet will dispose of the abnormal fat first, which will allow for a visual transformation of the body. However, in order to maintain a healthy weight after a weight loss program in any circumstance one must continue to have a well balanced diet.
Dr Simeon’s protocol requires you to eat fruit, vegetables and meat, fish or poultry. There is a vegetarian version as well.

I am interested in the Hcg Diet. I have tried one tablet of Phentermine and could not tolerate it. I had my ovaries removed at 40 which placed me into early menopause and thus fat accumulation around my abdomen. I currently am on a Bioidentical Hormone replacement therapy that is working well for me. I still need help with weight loss. Please contact me at 949-355-7994
Hi Nouveau Heath & Dr Rubin: I’m curious about the HCG program. I have researched information on the web and understand the highly restrictive diet – My questions – does it really work? Do people manage to keep the weight off? How much does it cost? Love the idea of a jump start to weight loss but also have learned that if it seems to good to be true, it usually is. Carol
